OUSTED SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER GETS TOP VOTE TOTAL

ASBURY PARK, April 20, 2010 -- A former board president removed from office for allegedly interfering with a hiring decision was the top vote getter in today's city school board election.

Remond Palmer received 390 votes, according to unofficial totals released by the Monmouth County Clerk's office. His running mates, former substitute teacher Joseph Raines Jr. and unsuccessful City Council candidate Kevin Michel, finished second and third in the voting for three board seats.

Palmer, Raines and Michel will replace incumbents Garrett Giberson, Barbara Lesinski and Daniel Weiss. Lesinski, the current board president, was seeking a second term in office. Giberson was seeking a third term. Weiss was appointed to a vacant seat last spring and was seeking his first elected term.

State officials removed Palmer from office in November of 2004, saying that he interfered with the hiring of an employee in the district.
